Uranium Supply and the Nuclear Power Renaissance

One small pellet of enriched uranium, about the size of a fat pencil eraser, contains about the same energy as 3 cords of wood, or 3 barrels of fuel oil.

Uranium is key to a successful nuclear renaissance, on which much as been written. Global warming has caused many environmentalists to throw their support behind nuclear energy, an energy source free of greenhouse emissions present in “fossil fuels’ such as coal and oil. The nuclear industry greatly improved its safety record since the Three Mile Island accident decades ago. It has also improved reactor on-line efficiency to over 90%, important for both grid stability and investor return on investment. With coal and oil prices tripling, nuclear energy by

Renewable Energy Options for the Home - Part 2 (Solar Energy)

The sun is a very powerful source of energy which powers natural cycles on earth like wind, water flow and plant growth.. Solar power is the technology of obtaining energy from the sun. There are three approaches to gain maximum benefit of solar energy in our buildings.

Passive Solar

Passive solar technologies convert sunlight into usable heat without the assistance of other energy sources. Passive solar architecture is a design approach which seeks to:

- maximise solar gains in the building (through orientation such as a south-facing site, layout, glazing etc)
- avoid the loss of heat from the building through high quality insulation
- ensure a high degree of comfort by using controlled ventilation and daylighting

Thoughts On Nuclear Power as a Source of Emission Free Energy

For decades, the terms nuclear power have sent feelings of fear in those hearing them. We have all been influenced by the movies and reports on the devastating impact that nuclear power can have on our Nation. However, nuclear power can also be a positive thing for our Nation, offering as an alternate source of emission free energy. Used properly, nuclear reactions can be used to generate energy in the forms of heat and electricity.

Few people realize that many countries, including the United States are already using nuclear power as a source of energy. The United States uses nuclear power to supply up to 20% of the overall usage. Other countries use it a lot more. For example, France produces

Solar Power versus Generator the Choice

As I write this in early 2007, the controversy over global warming has heated up (pun intended), and people are taking another look at solar power versus generator. For those living outside the power grid, the second look may save not only the green in the rain forest, but also the green in the bank.

Many who live “off the grid” in isolated locations have traditionally relied on generators for electrical power. Others have installed generators for back-up, emergency electrical power. Neither thought there was a choice, but now there is a choice: solar power versus generator.

Nuclear Energy and the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI)

Nuclear energy policy continues to advance. There is an initiative to make the nuclear fuel cycle more efficient, cleaner, and generate less waste. The nuclear fuel cycle in the U.S. generally involves uranium mining, nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear reactor operation, spent fuel removal and storage, and spent fuel and nuclear waste disposal. Other countries, such as France and Japan, reuse their spent fuel because it contains large quantities of enriched uranium and plutonium. These two elements are used in the nuclear reaction. The potential energy savings is huge, since each pellet of recovered enriched uranium, about the size of an eraser on a fat pencil, can generate as much energy as three cords of wood or three barrels of fuel
